Breaking down Juve's UCL opponents

Following the League Phase draw of this year's UEFA Champions League, we take a look at a few curiosities of the eight opponents Juventus will come up against, namely Manchester City, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Club Brugge, Lille and Aston Villa.

  • Juventus have won both of their Champions League matches against Manchester City: in the 2015/16 group stage, 2-1 away and 1-0 at home. Overall, in their six European matches against the Citizens, there have been three Juventus wins, two draws and one defeat (dating back to September 1976 in the UEFA Cup).
  • Juventus and Leipzig have never met in UEFA competitions; in their four previous meetings against Italian teams, there have been two wins, one draw and one defeat (Atalanta and Napoli were the two rivals faced, both in the Europa League).
  • There have been four previous meetings between Juventus and Club Brugge in the Champions League/European Cup: in the 2005/06 Champions League group stage, there were two Juventus wins, and in the 1976/77 European Cup (semi-finals) there was one Juventus win and one defeat.
  • The Bianconeri have lost in six of their eight European matches against Benfica (1W, 1D), including the last two dating back to the 2022/23 Champions League.
  • There are no European precedents between Juventus and PSV; this will be the fourth Dutch opponent the Bianconeri will face, after Ajax, Feyenoord and Twente – the last precedent was the defeat against Ajax at home in April 2019.
  • Lille have never met Juventus in European competition: in the 12 previous meetings against Italian teams, they have recorded six wins, four draws and two defeats.
  • Stuttgart have never met Juventus in European competition: in the 11 previous meetings against Italian teams, they have two wins, three draws and six defeats to their name.
  • There are two European precedents between Juventus and Aston Villa and both are from the 1982/83 European Cup, with two English victories in the quarter-finals of that edition.
