Italy exited the Under-21 European Championships at the group phase following a 1-0 loss to Norway.
Although Norway, Italy and Swtizerland all collected three points with one win a piece, behind group winners France on full points, it was the Swiss that qualified as runners-up due to their having scored one goal more than the young Italians.
The game's only goal in the third group match that sent the Azzurrini home was scored by Salernitana player, Erik Botheim on 65 minutes. Fabio Miretti was introduced on 71', as was inbound loanee Andrea Cambiaso, in Italy's bid to turn the game around. Nicolò Cambiaghi struck the crossbar on 81', the closest the Azzurrini came to scoring the goal that would have seen them progress to the knock-out phase.
