It was the second cross-city derby in the Spanish capital for Atletico Madrid, where they ran out winners away to Rayo Vallecano.
It was a balanced match between the two, which saw Rayo threaten at goal on several occasions after the break, seeing Jan Oblak called into action more times than what Diego Simeone's team could produce at goal.
However, Atletico's defensive display saw them hold strong and they broke the deadlock in the 74th minute via a Griezmann strike, courtesy of an Alvaro Morata assist.
The game ended 1-0 in favour of Los Colchoneros. They will now direct all their attention to the forthcoming Champions League clash against Juventus.
