On Saturday 11 November at 18:00 CET Juventus will be taking on Cagliari at the Allianz Stadium.
It will be the 83rd time the two sides have faced each other in Serie A, and the 42nd taking place on Bianconeri home turf.
The Serie A head-to-head for Turin games stands at 25 Juventus wins, 14 draws and just two Sardinians victories, with the last of these triumphs coming when current Juve boss Max Allegri was in charge of Cagliari. The most hotly-contested fixtures between the two teams took place in the 1970s. In the cover image you can see Fabio Capello firing a shot in the match played in the 1975/76 campaign, with the home team eventually coming out on top thanks to a penalty converted by Oscar Damiani.
PIETRO’S PAYBACK
Only once did Cagliari play at the Stadio Comunale with a Scudetto on their shirts. It was in 1970/71, with the Sardinians having claimed their first and only top flight title the season before, thanks in no small part to a 2-2 draw secured against the Bianconeri. The Old Lady went on to settle the scores with a 2-1 victory, in which the winner came from Pietro Anastasi. Here we see him thwarted by the onrushing goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi.
DEFENDERS ON THE ATTACK
Pictured is Fabio Grosso surrounded by a group of Cagliari players, wearing red in this match from the 2009/10 season. The fixture was actually settled by a defender: not the Juventus number six in action here, but one who would go on to become a European champion in 2021: Giorgio Chiellini. Juventus v Cagliari is also a story of great defenders.
DYBALA HITS THE GROUND RUNNING
Juventus v Cagliari in 2018/19 featured a lightning start from the hosts, with Paulo Dybala netting within a minute’s play. The Argentine’s goal stemmed from good pressing work by Joao Cancelo, who went on to pick out Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguayan then found his fellow Rioplatense, whose right-footed finish nested into the corner beyond Alessio Cragno’s reach.
JUVE HIT REAL FORM
Five out of five: this is Juventus' track record over their most recent home matches against Cagliari. One of the most goal-heavy games was the Bianconeri’s 4-0 victory in the 2019/20, season, with all four goals coming in the second half. Leonardo Bonucci was the standout figure from that match, starting five attacks during the hosts’ excellent second 45 and also forcing Cagliari to wait until the 40th minute for their first shot on target.
THREE PLUS TWO
The team celebrates as Juventus claim a 2-0 win over the Sardinians, with both goals supplied by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese also netted a hat-trick against Cagliari in the previous season, meaning no player has scored more goals in this fixture than him. He is followed by Pietro Anastasi, Franco Causio and David Trezeguet on four.
