It may have only become standard practice in recent years but taking home the matchball after scoring a hat-trick is not a new custom. And if we look back through the annals of Juventus v Inter fixtures, we find Franco Causio doing just that in 1972.
Causio's star turn was aided on the day by Helmut Haller and Pietro Anastasi, both in fine fettle themselves.
With seven minutes on the clock, the German delivered a perfect cross that Causio flicked into the bottom corner to give Juve the lead.
The duo combined again 20 minutes later, when Haller's dinked ball was smashed home on the volley.
"Il Barone" completed his hat-trick five minutes from time as he cleverly bought himself a yard before rifling into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. 3-0 the final score.
Causio's three magic moments are captured in these photos from Bianconeri fanzine Hurrà Juventus at the time.
