Last success in Madrid

Back in November 2008, Claudio Ranieri’s Juventus side secured their third Champions League victory in four games by beating Real Madrid 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alessandro Del Piero nabbed a brace either side of half-time to ensure the Bianconeri registered their first success at Los Blancos’ home ground in 46 years.

They were ahead in the 17th minute when Marco Marchionni intercepted a stray pass from Guti Hernandez on the centre circle before supplying Del Piero who had made a run infield. He then drove forward towards goal unchallenged prior to curling a left-footed effort past the despairing dive of Iker Casillas.

Midway through the second-half, it was two.

Former Juventus centre back Fabio Cannavaro fouled an onrushing Momo Sissoko 25 yards out in Del Piero’s favourite territory. The Italian duly obliged from the set-piece as he bent an exquisite free-kick past the unmoved Casillas to wrap up a deserved 2-0 victory for the Old Lady.

The result would prove significant as the Bianconeri went on to win Group H, pipping Real at the post on head-to-head results, before eventually bowing out of the competition to Chelsea at the last 16 stage.
