We play for the pride of the city of Turin this weekend, as Juventus take on Torino in the Derby della Mole in Matchday 10 of the Serie A season (18:00 CEST).
To build up for the the Bianconeri vs. the Granata, we take a look at the top five ‘away’ Turin derbies:
Torino 0-1 Juventus 2018/19
In the middle of a tough set of festive fixtures in December that featured: Fiorentina, Inter, Roma, Atalanta and Sampdoria before the close of 2018, the Bianconeri had to contend with their cross-town rivals on 15th December. A tightly-contested derby took until the final 20 minutes to be unlocked, when pressure from the pressing Leonardo Bonucci forced Simone Zaza into a short backpass that saw goalkeeper, Salvador Ichazo bring down Mario Mandzukic for a penalty.
Ichazo nearly made amends for his error, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty into the bottom-right-hand corner proved to be too powerful. Juventus’ 5,000th Serie A goal, would go on to seal an important derby win, in an important sequence of games, at an important stage of the season that would eventually see the Bianconeri crowned as champions.
Torino 1-3 Juventus 2016/17
Another Derby della Mole in December, the Bianconeri would again contend their traditional Torino fixture sandwiched in-between tricky matches against Atalanta and Roma prior to ringing in the new year. An always difficult game was made all the more tougher from the get-go when Andrea Belotti headed Torino in front after just 16 minutes of play. However, the Bianconeri battled back and were level before the half hour-mark when Juan Cuadrado played a long ball to Manduzkic who laid off to Gonzalo Higuain, as El Pipita pounced to fire past Joe Hart.
The game remained very much in the balance until the final 10 minutes, as the Bianconeri really began to turn the screw and Higuain once again gave Hart no chance when hit a stunning half volley to put Juve in front. The comeback was well and truly completed in stoppage time when Miralem Pjanic was well-placed to capitalise on Paulo Dybala’s blocked shot that eventually went into the back of the net after two attempts to make it a 3-1 finish.
Torino 1-4 Juventus 2015/16
Closing out the month of the March this season was an eagerly anticipated Turin derby. Keen to flex our muscles and put on display of our might against our city rivals, the Bianconeri were going from strength to strength as we completed our incredible seasonal comeback that would eventually see us clinch the title in dramatic fashion!
Paul Pogba got proceedings off to a fine fashion when he curled in a delectable free-kick just past the half hour mark, that gave Daniele Padelli in the Torino goal absolutely no chance. 10 minutes later and it was 2-0, Sami Khedira’s run into the box unchallenged as the German tucked away our second. In the second half an early Belotti penalty gave the hosts hope, before they were then dashed by an Alvaro Morata brace, with the Spaniard first controlling a brilliant Pogba chipped pass to finish and then poaching on a free-kick that fell to him in the box. 4-1 and a fantastic final game of March 2016!
Torino 0-1 Juventus 2007/08
With the Bianconeri back, eyes immediately looked to the first Turin derby of the season and fans wouldn’t have to wait long, as this special Derby della Mole would take place on Matchday Six of the 2007/08 Serie A campaign.
A tense and tight match, it wouldn’t be until the dying embers of the game and a moment of quality that it would really light up. A long ball up to Trezeguet was instead mis-headed into the Frenchman’s path and with the ball still in the air, our number 17 struck a powerful blast timed to perfection into the Toro net to send the Juventus fans wild in the 93rd minute with seconds left to play! Of all of the Turin derbies this one would definitely be up there in the category of “most dramatic”.
Torino 0-4 Juventus 2002/03
A campaign that would see the two teams of Turin live out complete polar opposites, as the Bianconeri finished in first place to clinch their 27th Serie A title, whilst Torino finished dead last in 18th place. The gulf in quality couldn’t have been evidenced more in this Turin derby, on Matchday 10 of 2002/03.
Alessandro Del Piero would kick off proceedings after just six minutes of play when he scored a sensational aerial back heel from Pavel Nedved’s free-kick. Marco Di Vaio doubled our lead going into the break, as Nedved – again the assistman played in Di Vaio with a perfect through-ball that the forward finished with aplomb. Into the second half, and having had enough of teeing the goals up, Nedved decided to get in on the act himself after 52 minutes, scoring with a powerful effort from a Bianconeri counter-attack. The icing on the cake came on 89 minutes through Edgar Davids scoring on Marcelo Zalayeta’s through-pass to seal a fantastic 4-0 win!
