Top 5 defining Derby d’Italias!

Matchday 13 of the 2022/23 season will see arguably every Juventus fan’s most circled game when the fixtures were announced back in the summer, as Inter Milan will be the visitors to the Allianz Stadium.

This Sunday will be the 179th Juve-Inter, with kick-off set for 20:45 CET, and ahead of the match we look at the Top 5 defining Derby d’Italias!

2019/20: JUVENTUS 2-0 INTER

The first ever Juventus-Inter to played without a crowd in attendance due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In place of the usual crowd to greet the players out of the Allianz Stadium tunnel were flags arranged in the green, white, and red of the Italian flag, as a message of the united strength of the country to get through the crisis, but also as a symbol of the importance of the match – “the derby of Italy”.

A goalless first half was eventually unlocked after 55 minutes when Blaise Matuidi’s centre found its way to the feet for Aaron Ramsey, who fired home first-time to get that all-important breakthrough! The lead would be doubled just over 10 minutes later thanks to some pure skill from substitute, Paulo Dybala. La Joya brilliantly controlling Rodrigo Bentancur’s forward pass in his stride to turn Inter full-back Ashely Young, before playing a one-two with Ramsey, to turn Young once more and shoot past Samir Handanovic to make it 2-0.

2011/12: JUVENTUS 2-0 INTER

A HUGE Derby d’Italia as the Bianconeri were chasing their first Scudetto in five years as a tense battle at the top of the table with Inter’s crosstown rivals, AC Milan was heading into its final stages.

Despite Juventus creating most of the chances in the first half, the game ended 0-0 at half-time. However, we continued our pressing into the second and the pressure eventually paid off, when on 57 minutes, Andrea Pirlo’s in-swinging corner found the head of Martin Caceres to thump past Julio Cesar unmarked as a sea of jubilation exploded! The result was made safe inside the final 20 minutes when Arturo Vidal’s through-ball was expertly run onto by Alessandro Del Piero who slotted home a slick second goal to seal the 2-0 win for Juventus.

2002/03: JUVENTUS 3-0 INTER

A Juve-Inter where the Bianconeri would really flex their muscles over one of their biggest rivals. Coming in the second half of the 02/03 season at the Stadio delle Alpi, Juventus wasted no time in going for it, as after just four minutes a ferocious free-kick into the box from Pavel Nedved ended up deflecting off of Andres Guglielminpietro and into the Inter net to make it 1-0.

Nedved was involved once more when he collected a pass outside the area, turned and then hit a low left-footed piledriver that caught out goalkeeper, Francesco Toldo to double Juventus’ advantage. The visitors tried to get back into it but we held firm and even went close to getting a third, which would eventually arrive in the 83rd minute, with Nedved again instrumental as his centre picking out Mauro Camoranesi to seal the game at 3-0.

1996/97: JUVENTUS 2-0 INTER

An intense Juve-Inter that would be decided by two quality midfielders with a goal in each half by the pair.

The Bianconeri began on the front foot and almost opened the scoring when Alen Boksic’s diving header hit the post with Gianluca Pagliuca beaten. Marcello Lippi’s men would have to be patient up until the 40th minute, when a brilliant one-two between Vladimir Jugovic and Michele Padovano saw the Yugoslav midfielder crack an unstoppable drive into the back of the Inter goal, to give the Bianconeri the half-time advantage.

In the second half and Boksic would see his bad luck in front of goal continue, after rounding Pagliuca and seeing his shot cleared off of the Inter line. However, it would prove to be nothing but a respite for the Nerazzurri, as the subsequent corner kick came out to Zinedine Zidane and with hardly any back-lift the Frenchman hit a thunderous strike at goal from distance to make it 2-0 and settle the game in the Bianconeri’s favour.

1985/86: JUVENTUS 2-0 INTER

Another classic Juve-Inter settled by goals from two legendary Juventus midfielders, this time the great Michel Platini and the ever-dependable Massimo Bonini, with the goals again bookending each half.

The Frenchman won the penalty himself after expertly controlling a lofted pass and being felled in the Inter box. “Le Roi” confidently placed the ball on the spot before equally confidently dispatching it. Late in the second half and Bonini would be played into the box with a brilliant ball from Platini before firing across goal at an angle to confirm the Bianconeri’s win.
