Women's Victories: Juventus-Roma

Juventus-Roma is now the match of the matches in Italian women's football. Even this year, in the new setting of Biella, the two teams will face off in the challenge between the two top teams in the league, with both recording five wins in as many games so far this campaign.

Last year, the two teams split the national trophies, with Roma first in the league (and Juve second in the standings), and Juve winning the Coppa Italia against Roma thanks to Barbara Bonansea's winner in the "Zona Cesarini" Stadium.

The last previous match, in the Poule Scudetto, ended 5-2 in favor of the Bianconere, with goals from Nystrom, Girelli, Cernoia, Cantore and Pedersen.

Let's look back at a few other historic matches...

SEPT 16, 2022: 1-0

In the 53rd minute, Valentina Cernoia receives the ball on the left flank: she fakes a cross, but actually aims for the goal. Her shot is deadly, hitting the back of the net without leaving any chance for the goalkeeper.

This is only Serie A Matchday 3.

FEB 3, 2019: 1-0

A play by Sofie Jurge Pedersen is countered by Giada Greggi: this is the first Juventus-Roma match in history, played on February 3, 2019 in Vinovo. Juventus confirms its defensive solidity, confirming a great stat from the new year, having not yet conceded a goal. In attack, Juve creates many opportunities but some inaccuracy in the box coupled with a great display from Roma goalkeeper Rosalia Pipitone lead to the end of the first half at 0-0.

BARBARA SCORES

Barbara Bonansea decides the match at 19th minute of the second half. Her right-footed diagonal shot from outside the box hands her side three points and allows Juventus to maintain its lead in the standings.

DEC 12, 2020: 4-1

Juventus and Roma meet again two seasons later. In between, there was the Covid emergency that forced the two teams to skip the return leg match in Vinovo. On December 12, 2020, the Bianconere and the Giallorosse meet again, with the home team emerging as resounding victors.

GIRELLI-SHOW

The hero of the day is Cristiana Girelli. On the day in which Paolo Rossi's figure is celebrated on all the fields, she is the one who plays the part of the ruthless striker with two goals. The first one breaks the deadlock, taking advantage of the work done by Arianna Caruso. The collaboration between the two teammates also works in the goal that closes the first half of the game on 3-1: corner kick by number 21 and winning header by number 10.

SEMBRANDT AND HURTIG

In between Girelli's two goals, there is also the goal scored by Sembrandt. In this case too, everything starts from a corner kick taken by Boattin. Girelli's header that Roma's defense somehow manages to partically clear, but on the rebound Linda is the fastest to take advantage of it. The goal of the final 4-1 is the work of Lina Hurtig's left foot a minute from the end.
