Bayern Munich slipped to their second Bundesliga defeat of the season as fifth-placed Mainz stunned the Allianz Arena to come away with a 2-1 victory this evening.
After heavy first-half pressure from the hosts, Jairo Samperio silenced the home crowd by sweeping past Manuel Neuer following a clinical counter attack on 26 minutes.
The hosts rallied and levelled midway through the second half when Arjen Robben, who struck in the Champions League 2-2 draw with Juventus, continued his purple patch in front of goal courtesy of an unstoppable strike from the edge of the area.
There was to be one final twist in the tale, however, as Jhon Cordoba struck with four minutes of normal time to grab the visitors a vital three points in their quest for Champions League football next season.
Despite the defeat and Borussia Dortmund’s victory over Darmstadt, Pep Guardiola’s men remain five points clear of their local rivals ahead of Saturday night’s enticing top-of-the-table clash at the Westfalenstadion.
