Juventus Women First Team defeated Fiorentina 1-0 in the second leg of the Italian Cup semi-final and consequently, following their success in the first leg in Florence, booked their spot in the final.

The match was decided by Emma Stolen Godo's goal, which she scored in the first half after getting on the end of a Barbara Bonansea delivery. It was a solid performance in which the Bianconere managed the game well, and now they will face Roma in the final.

FIRST HALF: JUVE AHEAD THROUGH STOLEN GODO

The Bianconeri started off strongly and came close to taking the lead in just the 4th minute: Bonansea picked out Amalie Vangsgaard but her header but missed the target. The Danish forward attempted another headed effort in the 7th minute but was only able to find Francecsa Durante in the Fiorentina goal.

Fiorentina came forward in the 15th minute through Agnese Bonfantini, who shot from a good position, but Pauline Peyraud-Magnin comfortably saved. Juventus maintained control of the game and took the lead in the 24th minute: Bonansea crossed from the right and Stolen Godo timed her run perfectly to meet the delivery and beat Durante to put the Bianconere ahead.

The visitors tried to react and Emma Severini attempted a shot from the edge of the box in the 29th minute, only to be denied by Peyraud-Magnin, who saved at full stretch. In the final minutes of the first half, Fiorentina again came forward through Veronica Boquete, but none of her teammates we able to get on the end of her cross. The teams went into the break with Juventus leading 1-0.

SECOND HALF: JUVE CLOSE OUT THE GAME

In the second half Fiorentina tried to apply more pressure, but the Bianconere defence stood strong. They came close in the 50th after a piece of link up play between Bonfantini and Severini but they were unable to convert. There was a momentary pause to proceedings in the 53rd minute when Peyraud-Magnin suffered a blow and remained on the ground, but after a few minutes she was able to return to her place between the posts.

Juventus went on the attack again in the 59th minute with Lindsey Thomas, who got away from her opposite number well before shooting, but her effort deflected behind for a corner. Shortly afterwards, Severini let off a strike from outside the box, but the Bianconere defence were able to block the effort and snuff out the danger.

In the 74th minute Fiorentina went close to equalising: Emma Snerle struck a precise right-footed effort that seemed destined for the corner, but Peyraud-Magnin, with the help of the post, managed to tip it behind for corner with an extraordinary save.

In the closing stages, Juve controlled the game without taking any further risks. After four minutes of added time, the full time whistle confirmed their 1-0 victory and their place in the final of the Italian Cup, where Canzi's side will face Roma.

MASSIMILIANO CANZI

“It was a very important match, one that we could not afford to lose: we achieved the goal of reaching the final. We are happy with the way this season is going and first of all we have to give credit to those who made quality additions to the squad, which is the first key aspect. We try to give simple and clear concepts, the group is cohesive and welcoming, and this is an important thing. It’s not time to start drawing up any kind of balance sheet, because like in a restaurant, the bill comes at the end. The final? As always it will be a different game in itself, in the meantime we are happy to be in the final, and now we reset and from tomorrow we think about the league. I hoped, however, to still be in two competitions by this stage of the season, and that is how it is.”

LINDSEY THOMAS

“I am happy with how I have adapted to this new role, after a few months I am doing well; I have learnt to defend, starting from an attacking position, I am also happy with today's match: in general, this has been a positive year. Now we're thinking about the final, which is always a special match, in which we want to put on a show: we'll prepare for the challenge as we always do, we definitely want to bring home the trophy, so we'll undoubtedly be ready for an encounter that is always a great spectacle.”
