Juventus Women fell to their second defeat of the season away at Sampdoria on Matchday 11, missing the opportunity to draw level with Roma at the top of the table ahead of their game away at Como Women on Sunday.
The Bianconere lost 1-0 in Liguria to a late Asia Bragonzi goal, failing to make their chances count at the other end of the pitch.
On what was Federica Cafferata’s first start for the Bianconere since joining in the summer, things didn’t exactly go to plan in the first half. Samp were defensively stubborn and, although the hosts didn’t offer too much in attack, they kept Lindsey Thomas, Lineth Beerensteyn and Sofia Cantore relatively quiet. When the Bianconere managed to find a way to get closer to goal, Amanda Tampieri was equal to everything they threw at her between the posts.
Beerensteyn went close on a a couple of occasions. In the first half she was found by Thomas and had two attempts, the first being blocked before Tampieri did well to turn the second behind.
Arianna Caruso tried her luck a couple of times too, as did Cafferata, but Tampieri had an answer for every question that was asked of her in the Samp goal.
The second half didn’t see many more chances created by the Bianconere, though Beerensteyn did find space in the box to be picked out by a bright Sofia Cantore, only to send a powerful left-footed strike over the crossbar.
Inside the final 10 minutes and with Juventus pushing for a winner, it was the hosts who found their way to goal with Bragonzi, on loan in Liguria from the Bianconere, heading in a rare venture forward from Samp.
Maelle Garbino, who had come off the bench, went close to a late leveller when her stoppage-time strike crashed back off the crossbar, but there was to be no late equaliser for the Bianconere.
So the year that was 2023 ended on a sour note for our Bianconere with the Christmas break now here. Attention immediately turns to January 7’s Italian Super Cup fixture with Roma in Cremona.

“We made a lot of mistakes, both individually and as a team. We weren’t able to score, and we weren’t able to play with the right composure. They took advantage of their chance on the counterattack. It was a strange match, but it confirms that nothing can be taken for granted and there are no easy matches.”
