It ended in defeat for Juventus Women on the road to Roma on Sunday afternoon. Joe Montemurro’s side lost 3-1 at the The Fontane to fall eight points behind the Serie A leaders.

The match

The game started relatively positively for the Bianconere, at least in that they were trying to be on the front foot and pressed their hosts, and Sofia Cantore tried to force a way to goal from the right.

But the hosts started to grow into the game and Pauline Peyraud-Magnin had to be alert between the posts to keep them out, before Lineth Beerensteyn brought Benedetta Glionna to ground for a Roma penalty. Manuela Giugliano made no mistake from 11 metres to give the Giallorosse the lead.

Juventus attempted to level instantly, and Julia Grosso, putting in a good shift, played her part in sending Beerensteyn into the box with a chance to make immediate amends, but her strike was well blocked by Camelia Ceasar in the Roma goal.

While Roma pushed for a second, Juventus sought a leveller and both Arianna Caruso and Joe Echegini had efforts.

The Bianconere came out in the second half looking to level things up, and Cantore’s cross to Echegini very nearly saw them equalise but for Moeka Minami sniffing out the danger.

Evelyne Viens made it 2-0 to Roma, before Elena Linari rifled in their third.

Juventus kept trying to find a way back into the game, but Lindsey Thomas’ goal came too late in the day to make any significant impact on the result.

Joe Montemurro’s post-match comments

“Roma made the most of the chances they had, we have to give them credit for that. It didn’t go to plan this evening, they made the most of their physical characteristics and their speed. We have to keep working, focusing on being more effective in attack… that was left lacking a little again tonight because we still created chances. There are three games left of the regular season and then the Scudetto Poule, so let’s not give up. Mathematically, anything can still happen. Now we’re thinking about the Italian Cup [against Sampdoria] and then we’ll focus on the league again.”
