Home defeat for Juventus Women’s First Team on Matchday three in Group C of the UEFA Women's Champions League, as they lost to Arsenal 0-4 at the ‘Pozzo-La Marmora’ stadium in Biella.
Below is the match report, the post-match comments and the scoresheet.
THE MATCH REPORT
It wasn't an easy challenge for coach Massimiliano Canzi's players, who tried to pose a threat from the start - first through Sofia Cantore's effort from the edge of the area after three minutes and then shortly afterwards when a fluid attacking move ended with Valentina Bergamaschi who couldn't find space to get a shot off. The English side stepped up the tempo, and their first real chance came in the 22nd minute through Emily Fox's left-footed shot into the side netting.
The Bianconere’s best chance of the first period came after 26 minutes but Chiara Beccari couldn't generate enough power behind her shot. However, it was Arsenal who took the lead in the 37th minute following a well worked move that ended with Frida Maanum finding the back of the net from close range
The Bianconere tried hard but were unable to unlock the English team’s defence and so at the end of the first half the score was 0-1 to Arsenal.
The first big chance of the second half fell to the visiting team, with Pauline Peyraud-Magnin making a fine save to deny Leah Williamson in the 56th minute before two minutes later Katie McCabe hit the woodwork. The introduction of Barbara Bonansea and Paulina Krumbiegel struggled to slow Arsenal’s momentum, but in the 65th minute Amalie Vansgaard had the best chance of the match for Juventus Women as she threw herself at the ball in the Arsenal penalty area, but she was unable to find the necessary finish.
Canzi turned to the bench again, sending in Emma Kullberg and Hanna Bennison, but in the 75th minute it was Arsenal who found their second goal: Stina Blackstenius did excellently down the left and opened up the space for a left-footed drive at the front post which Peyraud-Magnin was unable to keep out.
The second goal seemed to open the floodgates as Arsenal found their third shortly afterwards when Mariona Caldentey got on the end of another impressive move on the left-hand side that opened up the Bianconere defence. There remained enough time for one more goal for the visitors in the closing stages, as Caitlin Foord got on the end of Kyra Cooney-Cross’ delivery to make it 0-4.
MASSIMILIANO CANZI
“It is a defeat that hurts because we lost by a wide margin, but we are fortunate that we have another match soon and we must now focus on that. We lost some individual duels, then the way the match unfolded led us to risk more than we had prepared for: there are various phases within a single match and when we behind we tried to force the result, also creating interesting opportunities like the one for [Amalie] Vangsgaard that we didn't take advantage of, and so things didn't go as we had hoped. Being able to play against them again next week will be an incentive to show that we can do better than this: of course, we must take one game at a time and remember that we can still qualify and must continue trying to put in great performances.”
ARIANNA CARUSO
“We are very disappointed with the result, this week we will work on all the mistakes we made to make sure we are better in our next match against them: until their second goal we were in the game, then we lost our concentration and against such a strong team you cannot afford to do that. I congratulate them, but I repeat: we have to analyse and work hard because we have all the qualities to achieve a different result in London. It's the first real misstep of the season: it hurts, but we have to show that we know how to react immediately.”
BARBARA BONANSEA
“It's a tough defeat to accept, we had a good first half with good chances in the beginning, even though we were behind at half-time: we had to continue like that, but in the second half we were in trouble and after they made it 0-2, things didn't go well. Being more clinical in front of goal would have definitely helped, but there are times when you can't score in the opening stages, but the game lasts 90 minutes: it's a hard 0-4 to accept, but we keep working to continue our excellent start to the season. This will be fuel for next week's challenge: after defeat, we must get back up and come back stronger. Now we focus on the league match on Sunday, and then we will turn our attention once again to Arsenal.”
