The Juventus Women’s First Team returned to action in the best way possible on Sunday afternoon, going away to Napoli and heading back home with three more points to stay top of the Serie A table after a comprehensive 3-0 win on Matchday 8.
Cristiana Girelli and Arianna Caruso each scored penalties either side of a Paulina Krumbiegel strike to seal the Bianconere’s seventh win from eight Serie A Matches so far this season.
THE MATCH REPORT
It didn’t take long for the Bianconere to get themselves in front, even though Napoli had pressed forward first. Barbara Bonansea won a penalty when, after working her way into the box, her shot struck a hand. Up stepped Cristiana Girelli and our no.10 made no mistake from the spot, slotting into the bottom corner.
Still inside the first quarter of an hour, Hanna Bennison went close to doubling the lead. Finding a pocket of space about 20 yards from goal, she unleashed a troubling strike that bounced back off the upright and had Beatrice Beretta scrambling across her goal-line.
The Bianconere kept pushing for a second, and Beretta did well to cut out an attempted centre from Girelli with a queue of Juventus players ready to finish. She then had to be at her reactive best to deny Bonansea after Paulina Krumbiegel had done well to tee her up in front of goal.
It was again Bonansea who forced Beretta into action as half time approached. A long ball to Girelli ended with the scorer of the opener laying off to her partner in attack, but Bonansea’s effort was tame and the Napoli goalkeeper was able to keep it out without much trouble.
Beretta’s busy afternoon continued into the second half and she had to be alert early on to keep out an Eva Schatzer volley on the end of a cross from Krumbiegel. The Napoli ‘keeper was again responsive from the resulting corner, gathering a headed effort from Bonansea as their personal battle continued.
Girelli had the chance to get her second and Juventus’ third just shy of the hour mark, but could only head Emma Kullberg’s cross over.
It took another penalty to beat the in-form Beretta again. A nicely constructed move was interrupted when substitute Arianna Caruso was brought down in the box, and it was she who herself stepped up to put away the resulting spot kick for the third goal of the afternoon.
Chiara Beccari, who came off the bench alongside Caruso and Amalie Vangsgaard, looked to get in on the act then, but her path to goal became overcrowded and she was unable to either get a shot off or to find the Danish centre-forward, instead leaving Beretta to gather up another loose ball in her area.
With the game winding down, Massimiliano Canzi took the chance to share the playing time out. Asia Bragonzi came on for Bennison, and Azzurra Gallo was also introduced from the bench in place of Krumbiegel.
MASSIMILIANO CANZI'S POST-MATCH COMMENTS
"The penalty helped us to start with, and it allowed us to manage the game from there. Napoli had started very well, but things turned a bit after we scored, just as we had hoped it would. We have a team that has been well constructed by the club, it's one that works well and applies itself.
"The league is still very open and it's still very early, I don't think anybody can be ruled out of the title race just yet."
PAULINA KRUMBIEGEL'S POST-MATCH COMMENTS
“It was a difficult match today and we needed to show patience. We had a very aggressive opponent but we scored our goals and got three important points.
“Of course I like scoring goals but the most important thing is that we are scoring as a team, it doesn’t matter who the individual is, all that matters is that we win.”
