01 November 2022
Juventus was founded on 1 November 1897 and down through the years the club's birthday has fallen on a match day.
Accompanying such an important date with victory provided the icing on the cake.
That is exactly what happened at Empoli in 2014, when Andrea Pirlo and Alvaro Morata netted in a 2-0 success.
TICKLED PINK IN 1987
In 1987 Juve turned 90 and returned to its origins for the occasion. Against Avellino, Juve donned the pink shirt that had not been worn since their first appearances.
In the stands Umberto Agnelli commented with irony, "We'll see if it beings us luck, the first who put it on wanted to change it ...".
Fresh from three home wins and as many away defeats in the league, the Lady won 3-0. Stefano Colantuono's own goal opened the scoring, then in the last quarter of an hour Ian Rush and Angelo Alessio found the net.
EUROPEAN NIGHT IN 1989
Eight days before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Juve were involved in Europe at home, as coincidence would have it, against PSG in for the second leg of the round of 32 in the Uefa Cup. Captain Tacconi was all smiles at the pre-match handshake, evidently optimistic about the outcome, and he was right.
The Bianconeri repeated what they did in France, a win by a one goal margin - 1-0 in Paris, 2-1 in Turin. Juve passed the round in a competition they would eventually win at the end of a long journey.
RAINING GOALS IN 1992
Every so often birthday celebrations have given rise to exaggerated parties, which in football translates into a goal fest.
One such event happened at the Delle Alpi in 1992. On a rainy day the team decided to reward the public who braved the bad weather with a 5-1 triumph.
Dino Baggio opened the scoring, while Marco De Marchi and Paolo Di Canio added to the fun before the break. In the second half Roberto Baggio scored a brace, taking advantage of a too high defensive line on the part of the visitors, to leave the fans singing in the rain.
GALLANT IN GLASGOW IN 1995
Birthday number 98 was unforgettable. Juve were called on to perform in a difficult away match in the Champions League in Scotland. Rangers had triumphed in the league for seven straight seasons and playing at Ibrox Park was anything but simple.
But Lippi's team was on song, performing as well away as at home. Four goals in Turin were followed up with four goals in Glasgow. A masterpiece of team football, with goals from Del Piero, Torricelli, Ravanelli and Marocchi.
With such a showing, it was almost expected that that team would reach the final in Rome to raise the cup with the big ears.
100 YEARS YOUNG IN 1997
There was no better place to honour the club's first 100 years than to take the field for a league match. Against Udinese the Bianconeri prevailed 4-1. The Friuliani took the lead with Locatelli, then Conte equalised before the break.
In the second half the forwards turned on the style. Inzaghi, Del Piero from a penalty and Amoruso turned the match decisively.
TRADEMARK ALEX IN 2008
Alessandro Del Piero against Francesco Totti - the match between Juventus and Rome at the Olimpico was a shodown between two great Italy team mates, as well as flagbearers for their respective clubs.
The Bianconeri number 10 came out on top when he invented a wonderful free-kick to break the deadlock. A detail worth mentioning, only a few months before, Alex had scored against Roma with another set piece special.
Marchionni added goal number two to make it the birthday evening even better.
AN EMPTY STADIUM in 2020
Juve celebrated its 123rd birthday in Cesena, in an empty stadium due to Covid. The Bianconeri delivered a birthday gift on the pitch with a resounding 4-1 victory. Alvaro Morata broke the deadlock on 14 minutes, yet Tommaso Pobega equalized on the half hour. Yet the Bianconeri change gear and take the victory thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo, on either side of Adrien Rabiot's strike.
