THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
Berner Sport Club Young Boys was founded on 14 March 1898, thanks to high school students Max Schwab, Hermann Bauer, Franz Kehrli and Oskar Schwab. They called their club ‘Young Boys’ in response to Basel-based club, the Old Boys.
Young Boys’ very first match was played on 17 June 1898 against FC Viktoria.
TROPHY CABINET
Twelve Swiss championships, six national cups, a League Super Cup, a Swiss Super Cup, two Challenge Leagues, three Anglo Cups, five "Karl Karl Rappan" cups and a Coppa delle Alpi.
THE LAST CHAMPIONSHIP
Young Boys lifted the Swiss Super League title in 2017/18. A season tally of 84 points saw the side finish ahead of Basel (in second place with 69 points). The eventual champions (then managed by Adi Hutter, before Gerardo Seoane took over in the summer) collected 26 wins, six draws and suffered only four losses, scoring 84 goals and conceding 41 in the process.
THE STORY THIS SEASON
So far in 2018/19, Young Boys are sitting pretty at the top of the table. Like Juventus, they boast a 100% record, having won all nine of their league fixtures with an impressive +26 goal difference.
Their dominant form has enabled them to open up a 12-point gap already on second-placed FC Zurich.
Their last outing, on 29 September, saw them win away to Thun, with a convincing 4-1 scoreline. Jean-Pierre Nsame, Miralem Sulejmani, Michel Aebischer and Roger Assalé were all on the mark for the league-leaders.
EUROPEAN HISTORY
Young Boys’ last trip south to Italy ended in a 3-0 defeat to Napoli in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League group stage, after they had beaten the Partenopei 2-0 in Bern.
In their only other outing in Italy, the Swiss side won 3-2 against Udinese in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage, having also recorded a 3-1 home victory.
Young Boys enjoyed arguably their most memorable European campaign in 1958/59 by reaching the European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-finals, eventually losing 3-1 on aggregate to Stade de Reims.
