Gigi Buffon believes the explanation behind this evening’s 2-2 draw with Cesena lies in the team’s psychological approach to the encounter.
With Roma having spurned the opportunity to close the gap at the top to four points earlier on in the day, Juventus knew their lead would be virtually unharmed regardless of the outcome at the Dino Manuzzi.
And, whilst acknowledging the merits of a spirited Cavallucci Marini side, the captain believes the blame ultimately lies at the door of a Bianconeri outfit who took their foot off the gas this evening.
Speaking to the media after the final whistle, Buffon said: “This draw and the attitude we showed at the start stem from Roma’s failure to win today. A team unaccustomed to being at the top could be forgiven for having this type of approach. Not us. We need to show a different attitude.
“Everyone is to blame, including the captain, who needs to try and offer positive energy to keep his team-mates awake and alert. Today I wasn’t able to. That said, it’s more than a decent point considering the difficulties we encountered.
“In the first 20 minutes we allowed them some incredible opportunities on the counter attack, chances that an alert and cynical side that wants to win can’t afford to hand out. Cesena were good value for the draw though.
“Sometimes Juve don’t understand that no-one is going to gift them the title, and when others slip up we need to be ready to take advantage. These moments are too important to throw away.”
