The 2015/16 season, Gianluigi Buffon’s 15th in the colours of Juventus, has arguably been his most extraordinary to date, with the 38-year-old keeper showing on countless occasions just why he is deservedly attributed the nickname of Superman.
There were marvellous milestones such as setting a new Serie A record for minutes without conceding (973), overtaking Gaetano Scirea as the second most capped player in the club’s history and equalling his personal record for clean sheets in a single season (21).
There were also simply spectacular saves, the double block on Milan’s Mario Balotelli and the dramatic parry of Nikola Kalinic’s penalty-kick against Fiorentina particularly poignant as the Bianconeri closed in on an historic fifth successive Serie A title.
On the back of another brilliant 12 months in the black and white, which culminated in the team clinching an historic fifth successive Scudetto title (Buffon’s ninth so far of an illustrious career), Bianconeri fans have voted the inspirational club captain the MVP for the entire 2015/16 campaign – one of two awards that he will receive at Juventus Stadium in the event of Saturday’s meeting with Sampdoria.
The second trophy he is set to raise high to the sky that evening will of course be that well-earned ninth Scudetto title of an illustrious career between the sticks, which he made sure of extending with Wednesday’s contract renewal until 2018.
Supporters have the opportunity to add the icing to an already unforgettable season by winning his iconic playing jersey, signed by ‘Superman’ himself.
