Giorgio Chiellini admits the Bianconeri were given a run for their money by Udinese this afternoon but believes the point gained from a tough encounter will prove to be worth its weight in gold come the end of the season.

Speaking to journalists following today’s goalless draw at the Stadio Friuli, the defender was quick to credit Andrea Stramaccioni’s team for their enterprising performance.

But he also claims the Bianconeri contributed to their own difficulties, allowing themselves to become to frenetic in their bid to win a game that could have taken them nine points clear of nearest rivals Roma at the summit of Serie A.

The 30-year-old said: “It was a difficult game and one in which we struggled. Udinese are playing a great brand of football and represent a tricky customer for everyone they face, especially at home.

“We made too many mistakes from a technical standpoint, particularly in the first half. We also risked being punished on the counter, where they’re a very dangerous threat.

“We did get things together later on and started to play the ball around better, without forcing passes like we did in the first half. We could have won it but the draw was the fairest result.

“It’s a shame because we knew we could have stretched our lead, although I think today will also end up representing an important step towards our final goal.”
