For Juventus Women, 2023/24 campaign has seen a notable effort to give minutes to young players coming through in Vinovo, with an eye set on the future.
Joe Montemurro has looked to make use of some of the young talent at the club, and plenty have been handed first-team debuts already, while many more have appeared for the Under-19 team for the first time as well.
From Sliskovic to Gallina debuting in her hometown of Biella
Gloria Sliskovic arrived at Juventus in the summer and is already a member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina international setup. Gloria debuted for the Bianconere in the Italian Cup win over Chievo Verona, helping to keep a clean sheet in a 6-0 triumph on the road.
It was in that very competition that more youngsters were given a run for the first time, with perhaps the standout story being Arianna Gallina’s. On February 7, 2024, she was introduced out of necessity after just seven minutes against Sampdoria in Biella, the very place where she was raised and with members of her family in the stands watching on.
That 1-0 second-leg win over Samp also saw Giorgia Berveglieri and Elsa Pelgander appear for the first team for the first time, and Giorgia Termentini was also named in the matchday squad. Elsa went on to make an appearance from the bench against Como Women in a 5-0 win.
The list doesn’t end there either. Other players have been called up to the matchday squad by Montemurro on occasion this season, as was the case for both Martina Cocino and Emma Mustafic for the trip to Pomigliano back in September, while Greta Bellagente was included in the squad for the home game against that same opposition. Bellagente also impressed in a friendly against Serie B side Freedom in November, providing a fine assist then.
Debuts in the U19s as well
Our Under-19 team has also seen younger players than usual break through, and as many as six players have already managed to earn call-ups, with three debuting.
- Esmeralda Di Bello: She debuted in a 5-1 win over Fiorentina on November 15, coming on in the second half.
- Anna Copelli: She debuted against Roma from the bench in the second half on November 19.
- Martina Tosello: On December 16 against Hellas Verona and in a 3-0 win, she came off the bench with 30 minutes to play.
- Viola Sossai: The young goalkeeper was called into the squad for the first time on November 26 for a 1-0 win at Arezzo.
- Viola Volpini: Her first call-up came on November 16, in that same squad as Tosello.
- Anna Mallardi: The youngest of the list, astonishingly born as late as 2009, she was in the squad for the 2–2 draw at Sassuolo on January 21 of this year.
