The new year has only just begun and already there are a couple of huge knockout games on the Bianconeri horizon, the latter of which could potentially yield the first trophy of 2019. As we build up to the first competitive games of the new year, Federico Bernardeschi has been speaking about returning to work and getting into the right mindset for these ties.
“We’re feeling good ahead of these two decisive matches: the Coppa Italia and the Super Cup,” the winger began. “It won’t be easy atBologna – it’s the first game back after the break, which will make it even more taxing as starting again is never easy. We will need to be very focused.”
Following the Coppa Italia on Saturday, Juventus travel to Saudi Arabia to contest the Super Cup against AC Milan.
“It will be a completely different experience, but both matches fit in with our objective, which is to win both competitions. We expect a pleasant shock in terms of the climate in Jeddah, but we’ll be ready. The important thing is to approach the match in the right way.”
FEDERICO’S SEASON SO FAR
“I’ve had two minor injuries, but that’s part of the job. A footballer has to be prepared for this. Now I need to be consistent in training and help out the team. We’re working very hard and the coach is explaining where I have to improve. I’m convinced that a footballer always needs to put themselves in the frame and challenge themselves, especially on a psychological level. This means being focused and concentrated in everything you do. Juventus has given and continues to give me confidence, strength and opportunities. The club is supporting me as I develop my talent by getting my head down and applying myself.”
THE BIANCONERI MENTALITY
“The Juve mentality is something you experience every day: you know that when you step out onto that pitch you have to give everything you have. Step by step you begin to realise what it actually means to be at Juve, it’s different from other clubs and I really like it.”
Speaking of mentality, last summer’s marquee signing Cristiano Ronaldo has fitted in perfectly in this regard.
“Just by watching him at work you learn a lot. I’ve been impressed with his amazing mentality, it’s been an eye-opener on a humanlevel how he is in the dressing room and the way he motivates and trusts his team-mates. He’s a superb professional and it’s great to have him with us.”
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LOOMING
“We need to focus on the matches we have coming up before the two-legged tie against Atletico Madrid. When the time comes, the tension will step up a notch, but the preceding matches will help us to be properly prepared.”
Finally, Bernadeschi revealed what would make him happy in 2019: “If Juve achieve all our objectives and I’m able to contribute to that success.”
