Fiorentina set up Thursday’s semi-final showdown with Juventus after cruising to a 3-1 win over Atalanta in the last 16 and silencing the Stadio Olimpico thanks to a 2-0 triumph against Roma in the quarter-final stage.
Their Coppa Italia campaign got off to a perfect start against the Nerazzurri in January, with Mario Gomez's goals coming either side of a Juan Cuadrado effort inside a thunderous opening 30 minutes for the hosts.
Atalanta reduced the deficit before the break when Rolando Bianchi hit the target with a low strike from the edge of the box, but it was to prove a mere consolation as Fiorentina, who had Marcus Alonso sent off late on, saw out the remainder of the game to set up a last eight meeting with Roma.
Gomez continued his Coppa Italia scoring run in the capital for last year’s beaten finalists, netting two second-half goals to dump the Giallorossi out of the competition in front of their own fans.
His first came in the 65th minute when he steered Manuel Pasqual's cross over Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski from close range, before the two combined again in the last seconds of the encounter to rubber stamp a memorable away triumph for the Viola.
