Bayern Munich prepared for Wednesday’s visit of Juventus in the best possible fashion by sweeping aside Werder Bremen 5-0 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening.
Pep Guardiola’s men made a typically bright start to the encounter, pressing Bremen high up the field from the off and they found the breakthrough after only nine minutes when Thiago Alcantara poked home Kingsley Coman’s cross from the right.
Bayern’s second goal, on the half-hour mark, came about in very similar circumstances, with Coman’s pace and trickery down the same flank culminating in another fine delivery into the middle with Thomas Muller at hand to stroke past Bremen keeper Felix Wiedwald.
Wiedwald was then forced to make a string of saves, preventing Mario Gotze, Franck Ribery, Coman, Muller and Thiago from extending the hosts’ lead, at least until the 65th minute when Germany international Muller finally broke his resistance again with a close-range volley.
Upon scoring his second of the evening, Muller was substituted for Robert Lewandowski and the Polish hotshot did not take long to write his name on the scoresheet, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to register his 24th Bundesliga goal this term.
And in the 90th minute, Thiago completed a brace of his own, turning in another Coman cross, the Frenchman’s third assist in a thoroughly convincing victory.
Guardiola’s charges move eight points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who however have the opportunity to reduce that lead on Sunday with a home match against Mainz.
