Genoa kicked off their 2014/15 campaign on the road with a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate at Fiorentina in September before Alessandro Matri, who re-joined Juventus during the winter transfer window, bagged a brace as they drew 2-2 versus Hellas Verona two weeks later.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men didn’t have to wait long for their first three points away from home though as Matri’s last-minute winner saw them edge out a stubborn Parma outfit 2-1 in early October.
The Rossoblu then replicated the same scoreline at the culmination of the month when Mauricio Pinilla’s strike six minutes from time secured victory in Verona over Chievo.
Two consecutive triumphs on the road soon became three as Giovanni Marchese, former Bianconero Iago Falque, Matri and Juraj Kucka all got their names on the scoresheet during a six-goal thriller away at Udinese in November that finished 4-2 to the visitors.
That winning streak came to a brief halt only seven days later when Mattia Perin saved Danilo Avelar’s penalty to ensure 10-man Genoa were able to return home from Cagliari’s Stadio Sant’Elia with a 1-1 draw.
However it was soon back to business on the final day of the month as Matri, ex-skipper Luca Antonelli and a Massimo Volta own goal bagged a comfortable 3-0 victory over Cesena in Emilia-Romagna.
Despite Falque’s solitary strike, Juventus’ arch-rivals Torino became the first Serie A side to inflict an away defeat on the Rossoblu by registering a 2-1 success at the Stadio Olimpico just ahead of the winter break.
And it didn’t get much better for Genoa in the new year: both Inter (3-1) and Napoli (2-1) ran out winners to prevent Gasperini’s charges from making any further headway for their European aspirations.
But they soon brought an end to the rot when Diego Perotti’s first-half spot-kick settled a tense encounter with Lazio in February before Falque’s effort secured a priceless point during a 1-1 Derby della Lanterna draw against Sampdoria.
On-loan Milan striker M’Baye Niang then hit his third goal of the term only for Federico Barba to peg the visitors back during Genoa’s last encounter on away soil, March's 1-1 stalemate with Empoli in Tuscany.
Having racked up 20 points on the road in this Serie A season, the Rossoblu currently boast the sixth best away record in Italy’s top flight. And following their 1-0 home triumph over the Old Lady back in October, they will be looking to do the domestic double when both teams take to the field at Juventus Stadium on Sunday.
