14 May 2024
The 2023/2024 Coppa Italia final between Juventus and Atalanta, scheduled for Wednesday, 15 May at 21:00 CEST at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, is fast approaching. Salernitana, Frosinone and Lazio were the opponents overcome by the Bianconeri to reach the final of this season's domestic cup competition.
Here's how Atalanta made their way to the final in Rome.
ROUND OF 16 AND SAN SIRO VICTORY
The team coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, like Juventus, began their campaign in the Round of 16, where they faced Sassuolo in Bergamo. The Nerazzurri were ahead of the Emilian team at half-time thanks to De Ketelaere's before another from De Ketelaere and then Miranchuk in the second-half closed out the tie. A week later, La Dea played their quarter-final at the San Siro against AC Milan, putting out a solid performance in mounting a comeback to seal their Last Four spot. The Rossoneri had taken the lead in the final minutes of the first half through Leao, but in the dying minutes of the first half, Koopmeiners put everything back on an even keel. In the second half the Dutch midfielder was again on target, this time from the penalty spot, to secure his side's progress in the competition.
SEMI-FINAL COMEBACK
Atalanta then faced Fiorentina in their two-legged semi-final, with the first leg in Tuscany and the return in Lombardy. The first of the two matches, staged at the beginning of April, was won 1-0 by La Viola, with Mandragora's decisive goal giving the Tuscan side the slight advantage. Gasperini's team needed a comeback at home to win the final: the Nerazzurri, in the return match, immediately restored parity on aggregate with Koopmeiners' goal in the first half, but it was in the final minutes of the encounter that the match sparked to life: Martinez Quarta's goal seemingly put the Tuscans back in the final, but only for seven minutes as Scamacca struck to put La Dea's nose in front. In the dying minutes Lookman and Pasalic then both found the back of the net, earning Atalanta a place in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome against Juventus.
