Among the previous Bianconeri visits to the United States - catch up on all the history of Juve’s summer experiences overseas here - there is a particular story that dates back to 2003.
The venue is the Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The date is August 3rd.
For just the second year in succession, and the third time in the history of the tournament, the Italian Super Cup was played abroad, and for the second time it was hosted Stateside, 10 years after the inaugural US-held event.
In a small way, it offered Juve a chance to exact revenge on their opponents, who had triumphed in another final played abroad, but closer to home, in Manchester. Also this time, nothing split Juventus and Milan over 120 minutes, and again the destination of the trophy would be decided on penalties.
Before reaching the spot-kick shoot-out, however, drama unfolded in stoppages of the first period of extra-time. Andrea Pirlo converted a penalty to give Milan the lead, which would have been enough to reward the Rossoneri with the trophy at the half-way point of extra-time due to the application of the ‘silver goal’ rule. Instead, Juventus broke up the field and David Trezeguet pounced to score a classic poacher’s goal to level the encounter in the third and final minute of added-on time.
With no further goals, the 55 thousand supporters braced themselves for the penalty kick decider. The Bianconeri scored all five, unlike their opponents, to win the Supercoppa Italiana for the fourth time in club history. During the celebrations, the biggest smile of them all was on the face of new-signing Stephen Appiah, but also captain Ciro Ferrara was a picture of delight, after all it was he that struck the winning spot kick.
