Alvaro Morata’s stoppage time goal meant Juventus claimed a 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday evening, as they ensured qualification to the Round of 16 in the Champions League.
UZUNI & RONALDO MAKE IT 1-1
The visitors came out looking determined and they took the lead in the 18th minute when Tokmac beat the offside trap and fed the ball through to Uzuni, who knocked it into the back of the net. That goal sparked the Bianconeri into action and they started to put pressure on the Hungarians: Danilo saw his header sails into the arms of Dibusz, while Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside. The Portuguese did manage to draw level minutes later though, when he received a ball from Cuadrado: he cut inside and fired an unstoppable effort from outside the box.
JUVE DOMINATE
The start of the second half saw the Bianconeri come out eager to take an early lead, with Bernardeschi having his shot charged down by Frimpong, while Ronaldo’s free-kick struck the wall. Bernardeschi then had his volley from the inside of the D finger-tipped onto the woodwork by the opposition keeper. With the game deadlocked, Pirlo opted to make a triple change, introducing Dybala, Bernardeschi and McKennie in place of Morata, Chiesa and Kulusevski respectively. Morata pulled off a brilliant move (a tunnel and a nutmeg) to play the ball to Ronaldo inside the box, he tried to flick it over the goalkeeper, but Dibusz stood his ground to keep it at 1-1. It was Bianconeri domination in the final 15 minutes, as they created a number of chances: the Spaniard came agonisingly close to making it 2-1 when his effort was denied by the post, while Bentancur saw his volley from range finger-tipped over the bar.
MORATA SCORES DECISIVE GOAL
Ferencvaros finally caved under the pressure and Juventus got the lead they were so desperately in search of: Danilo sent Cuadrado down the right flank, the Colombian delivered a great cross into the box and it feel for Morata who nodded it in from six yards out. The victory meant that Juventus guaranteed their place in the Last 16 of the Champions League with two group matches remaining.
