On Wednesday evening, 22 January 2020, it will be the tenth time that Juventus and Rome will face off in Turin in the Coppa Italia. It's a match full of charm and tradition, which began way back on 7 April 1940. The game presents two particularities: The first is that it's a game with no half measures: either the Bianconeri win (five wins) or the Giallorossi (4 wins), there has never been a single draw. The second is that in the context of the Juventus successes there is the same singular coincidence - When Juve prevails 3-0, the Bianconeri go all the way to the final.
1982-83
The great teams, those that make history, are judged by how they react to moments that are not going their way. This is exactly what Juve is going through before facing Roma in this Coppa Italia and it's one of the most dramatic in the Bianconeri's history, the reason being the disappointment of the team's Champions League final defeat in Athens. It takes a lot of pride for the team to recover and find the ability to recover and express themselves as they can.
Juve succeeds and in the first leg of the quarter-finals they beat Roma a week after Hamburg with a 3-0 win secured by Antonio Cabrini, Michel Platini and Zbigniew Boniek, before winning 2-0 in the second leg.
The team make their way to the final against Hellas Verona, and after losing the first leg 2-0 they turn it around with the same 3-0 scoreline in the third to lift the Coppa Italia and start a cycle of victories in Italy, in Europe and all over the world!
1994-95
Another first leg quarter-final, another 3-0 for the Old Lady, with the key differences, of the stadium no longer the Comunale but rather the Delle Alpi: It's Marcello Lippi's Juve against Carlo Mazzone's Roma.
It's a comfortable 3-0 win for the Bianconeri thanks to Gianluca Vialli's first half double and then Fabrizio Ravanelli's penalty in the 90th minute. This Coppa Italia would go on to be won with a 3-0 aggregate win the final against Parma, in the same year in which the Scudetto will also be celebrated. Particularly noteworthy is that face that Juve's convincing performance came, three days before that 3-2 win against Fiorentina which will Vialli repeated his brace in tandem with Alessandro Del Piero's masterpiece goal the same afternoon.
2011-12
January 24, 2012, Antonio Conte's Juventus against Luis Enrique's Roma. This time the quarter-finals have been updated to a one-off affair. The Cup evening is exciting for the Bianconeri dressed in pink, who absolutely dominate the game and could have won by a wider scoreline.
Juventus open the scoring through Emmanuele Giaccherini on an Andrea Barzagli pass which surprises a very high Roma defensive line. The result is then doubled by Del Piero's exceptional curler, a particularly well-celebrated masterpiece because it's Alex's first at the Stadium. Finally, one minute from the 90, Simon Kjaer deflects the ball into his own net past Maarten Stekelenburg trying to anticipate Alessandro Matri.
