Goalscorer Stephan Lichtsteiner paid tribute to team-mate Paul Pogba after the young Frenchman inspired the Bianconeri to break down a dogged Chievo outfit to win 2-0 at Juventus Stadium earlier today.
Following Pogba's sumptuous opener on the hour mark, the Swiss international then stamped his own mark on proceedings by turning home at the back post on 74 minutes after the Frenchman’s fine effort had initially been spilled by Gialloblu shotstopper Albano Bizzarri.
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone following today’s hard-fought triumph, Lichtsteiner began: “We knew that we would be in for a very tough game today. Then Pogba popped up and took care of things.”
Even though the Bianconeri have now opened up a seemingly healthy eight-point advantage over Roma at the summit of Italy’s top flight, the 30-year-old wasn’t getting too carried away with so much football still to be played between now and the end of the season.
“Our eight-point advantage for the time being doesn’t mean a thing. We want to keep pushing forward, also in the Coppa Italia.”
Lichtsteiner then ended proceedings with a brief word on his contract extension, signed in mid-January, which ties him down with the club until 2017 and cited Juventus’ hunger for further victory as a key factor behind his decision to remain in Turin.
He concluded: “What convinced me to stay? The desire to win at Juventus. I’ve got a great deal of belief in this group.”
