Third round: Milan 2-0 Perugia
Milan got their Coppa Italia campaign underway back in August with a 2-0 win over Perugia at the San Siro. Keisuke Honda handed the Rossoneri the perfect start, sweeping home Luca Antonelli’s cross after only ten minutes. Just before the half-hour mark, the Japan international then set up Luiz Adriano for the hosts’ second goal of the evening as the Brazilian opened his tally at the club he had just joined in the summer from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Fourth round: Milan 3-1 Crotone (aet.)
Milan required extra-time in order to see off Crotone at the San Siro. Luiz Adriano netted his second in as many games in the tournament just moments after the break, but Ante Budimir would level for the Calabrian outfit in the 68th minute, ultimately forcing the match to a further half an hour. Goalless at the midway point of extra-time, Giacomo Bonaventura and M’Baye Niang both got on the scoresheet late on to make sure of the Rossoneri’s progress to the last 16.
Last 16: Sampdoria 0-2 Milan
The Rossoneri overcame the test of their maiden away fixture in this year’s Coppa Italia by beating Sampdoria 2-0 at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Following a goalless first half, the visitors took control of proceedings when Carlos Bacca fed strike partner Niang for the opener.
The Colombian then wrapped up the win in the 93rd minute with his first goal in the competition, courtesy of an assist from Honda.
Quarter-final: Milan 2-1 Carpi
Milan’s front two of Niang and Bacca came up with the goods yet again in their quarter-final win over Carpi at the San Siro. Bacca put Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men in front on 14 minutes after combining well with Honda as in the previous round.
Bacca would then turn provider for Senegalese striker Niang to double the hosts’ lead on the half-hour mark and leave the Serie A new boys an uphill battle to get themselves back into the contest. Matteo Mancosu’s strike on 50 minutes halved their deficit, but they were ultimately unable to find a crucial second goal as Milan marched on to the semi-finals.
Semi-finals: Alessandria 0-6 Milan (agg.)
The Rossoneri eased past Alessandria over the two legs of their semi-final to reach the Coppa Italia’s showpiece event in Rome. In the tie’s first outing, played in Torino’s Stadio Olimpico, a Mario Balotelli penalty sufficed in giving the visitors a slender lead to take back to Milan for the return fixture.
The San Siro clash of 1 March would see Mihajlovic’s charges firing on all cylinders as braces from Jeremy Menez and Alessio Romagnoli and Balotelli’s fifth late on saw Milan posted their largest margin of victory in any competition this term.
