21/05/1936: Inter 0-1 Juve
The Bianconeri’s first ever Coppa Italia meeting with Inter ended in victory. The last-16 tie, played at the Civica Arena in Milan, had been originally been scheduled to take place four months prior, but was postponed due to heavy snow. In a hard-fought contest, winger Armando Diena struck the winner with only 11 minutes remaining to seal the visitors’ progress to the quarter-final stage, pencilled in for just three days later, when they would be knocked out by Fiorentina.
11/05/1941: Inter 0-2 Juve
Back at the Civica Arena, Juventus secured their third cup victory over Inter in as many attempts since 1936. Legendary striker Felice Borel, who incidentally would go on to coach the Old Lady for four seasons from 1942, ensured his side got off to the perfect start, netting an eighth-minute opener.
The former Italy international and 1934 World Cup winner was later joined on the scoresheet by striker partner Guglielmo Gabetto, whose goal in the 79th minute all but secured the Bianconeri’s path to the last-16 stage.
13/09/1959: Inter 1-4 Juve
Juve were crowned Coppa Italia winners for the third time in their history upon beating Inter at the San Siro in the final. Boasting the famous attacking trident of Omar Sivori, Giampiero Boniperti and John Charles, it would be the latter to open the scoring as early as the seventh minute.
Defender Sergio Cervato doubled the visitors’ lead with a thunderbolt of a free-kick just before the half-hour mark, but Mauro Bicicli’s goal halved the deficit shortly before the break.
Having weathered a series of Inter attacks at the start of the second period, Sivori dribbled into the box before firing low into the corner to double the Bianconeri’s advantage. The Argentine striker was then brought down in the penalty area in the 79th minute and Cervato made no mistake from the spot to finally get the Bianconero party started in earnest.
19/06/1975: Inter 2-6 Juve
Pietro Anastasi and Fernando Viola both bagged braces as Juventus romped to a 6-2 victory in February 1975’s cup clash with the Nerazzurri in the now defunct Coppa group stages. Striker Anastasi netted in the very first minute of the match, but it was his second goal and the side’s third, which especially caught the eye:
Roberto Boninsegna, who would switch Nerazzurri colours for the Bianconeri the following year, also found the target twice on the evening, but they would ultimately provide scant consolation for the hosts, as Gaetano Scirea and Antonello Cuccureddu completed the rout with a second-half strike apiece.
28/11/1979: Inter 1-2 Juve
The Bianconeri put one foot in the Coppa Italia semi-finals when they dispatched of the Nerazzurri 2-1 in the 1979 quarter-final first leg in Milan.
Cesare Prandelli was Juve’ catalyst to victory on the night, shooting the visitors into a 27th-minute lead and seeing his 77th-minute effort cannon off Leonardo Occhipinti to secure the win after Franco Pancheri had levelled for the hosts.
26/02/1992: Inter 1-2 Juve
Roberto Baggio was the undisputed hero in Juventus’ last-eight success at the home of the Nerazzurri in February 1992. The Bianconeri took a slender 1-0 lead into the return leg at the San Siro and they had looked on course to sail through to the semis within regulation time in Milan until Massimo Ciocci levelled the aggregate scores in the 79th minute.
Far from letting their heads drop, however, Juventus stunned their hosts in extra-time. In the 99th minute, Baggio brought his side ahead in the tie, firing in a fantastic free-kick off the underside of the crossbar. Il Divin Codino then put the visitors’ progress to the next round beyond doubt after tucking away a smart finish following a rapid counter-attack down the right moments before the referee whistled for full-time.
12/02/2004: Inter 2-2 Juve (4-5 on penalties)
Twelve years later, not only extra time, but penalty kicks would be required to seal Juventus’ passage to the 2004 cup final.
Marco Di Vaio and Adriano had each netted a brace in the semi-final first leg at the Stadio Delle Alpi and Inter’s Brazilian forward made his mark yet again by scoring the opener at the San Siro.
Goals from Alessandro Del Piero and Igor Tudor had looked to see Bianconeri to the final before Daniele Adani’s 95th minute equaliser sent the game into a further half-hour and then spot-kicks.
Del Piero, Enzo Maresca, Pavel Nedved, Nicola Legrottaglie and Fabrizio Miccoli all kept their cool from 11 metres to seal a 5-4 shootout victory and a place in the Coppa Italia final, which, however, would be won by Lazio.
