25 April 2016
For anyone wondering why Juventus’ 34th Scudetto is arguably the most special of all, here are just some statistics that support such a statement:
This latest league triumph is the Old Lady’s fifth on the trot, thus completing a second Quinquennio in the club’s illustrious history, equalling the remarkable achievement of five consecutive titles between 1931 and 1935.
No other team has won the Serie A title after claiming a solitary point from their opening three league matches and just 12 by Matchday 10.
Only in four previous seasons had a side lifted the Scudetto after losing their first league game: Torino in 1942/43, 1975/76 and Juventus in 1932/33 and 1974/75.
Furthermore, this Bianconeri team is the only one in the last decade to win the league when they weren’t top of the pile by the halfway point of the campaign.
Team records
If it is Juventus’ defensive strength to have formed the foundations for the success of the past five years, the club’s resolute rearguard took matters to a new level this term. Ten entire matches passed without conceding a goal between January’s win away to Udinese and March’s home success over Sassuolo, thus forming a Serie A record.
Furthermore, the 73 points gained from a possible 75 since the Derby Della Mole victory on 31 October represents the highest points haul from a run of 25 matches in Italy’s top flight.
Following the 3-0 win over Lazio on 20 April, the Bianconeri established a club record for consecutive clean sheets at home (nine) with another two matches to play still at Juventus Stadium against Carpi and Sampdoria.
If that wasn’t enough precedent setting for a single season, the Old Lady also created a new club record for the number of consecutive Serie A victories (15).
Personal records
2015/16 has been Paul Pogba’s most fruitful Serie A season in terms of goals (eight) and assists (12) combined.
Paulo Dybala has enjoyed his most prolific campaign to date with 16 league strikes. La Joya has also provided an impressive 68 scoring opportunities for team-mates.
As regards assists, Alvaro Morata (six) and Alex Sandro (three) have all set personal records for a single season, while Juan Cuadrado (six) has equalled his tally while in the colours of Fiorentina in 2012/13.
Between the sticks, Gianluigi Buffon has added further credence to the notion that some things really do get better with age. The 38-year-old, celebrating his ninth Scudetto title since joining Juventus in 2001, set a remarkable Serie A record for minutes without conceding (973). Meanwhile in Europe, the inspirational club captain made his 90th Champions League appearance for the Old Lady, thus becoming the highest-capped Bianconeri player in the competition’s history.
Managerial records
In winning the third Scudetto of his career, Massimiliano Allegri now enters the company of the ten most successful managers in Serie A history: Giovanni Trapattoni (seven), Fabio Capello (five), Marcello Lippi (five), Carlo Carcano (four), Hermann Felsner (four), Antonio Conte (three), William Garbutt (three), Helenio Herrero (three), Roberto Mancini (three) and Arpaad Weisz (three).
The Tuscan tactician also becomes the seventh coach in Juve’s history to win two consecutive Scudetto titles, following in the footsteps of Trapattoni, Lippi, Carcano, Conte, Cestmir Vycpalek and the Renato Cesarini - Carlo Parola partnership.
