Frosinone, Genoa and Cagliari are the newly-promoted teams taking their places in the 2023/24 Serie A season, though none of the three are new to the Italian top flight.
While that means there's nothing overly novel to note about the newcomers, there are still plenty of statistics and curiosities from the Bianconeri's previous meetings with each of them.
Frosinone
The Serie B champions, led by coach and ex-Juventus player Fabio Grosso, managed to achieve promotion after four years in the Serie B. They ended the campaign with 80 points and a seven-point cushion over Genoa in second, and they had their promotion sealed with a few games to spare. But Grosso opted against taking the Gialloblu into Serie A, and they are now coached by Eusebio Di Francesco.
They were fired to promotion last season by Samuele Mulattieri, Giuseppe Caso, Roberto Insigne and goalkeeper Stefano Turati. There were also shades of Bianconero in their promotion push as Gianluca Frabotta forced his way into the team with 22 appearances, and Juventus academy product Daniel Boloca was also involved, making 32 appearances.
Juve and Frosinone have met four times before, each of those coming in Serie A. Juventus have won three of their meetings with one draw. The first game between the two came in September 2015, ending in a draw at the Allianz Stadium. The Bianconeri also won 2-0 twice away, and the most recent game ended 3-0 in Juventus’ favour.
Genoa
The Rossoblu sealed an immediate return to the top flight. Their Serie B season began with some complications, but they changed their direction and handed the team to Alberto Gilardino in December, and he turned things around. The Ligurians ended the season with 73 points, Gilardino was confirmed as coach for 2023/24 and a number of familiar faces are involved at the club. Radu Dragusin, Domenico Criscito, Manolo Portanova and Stefano Sturaro are all at Marassi.
Juventus’ last game against Genoa ended badly for the Bianconeri as the Rossoblu fought against relegation, but the record is generally good against the Grifone. In 110 games, Juve have won 67 and 24 of those have come in Liguria. They’ve lost 22 times and drawn 21.
It’s hard to think about this fixture without mentioning the clash at Marassi in August 2017. Then, Juventus were 2-0 down after just seven minutes and won 4-2.
Cagliari
Cagliari’s situation is similar to Genoa’s in that they are back in the top flight after one season in Serie B, but their return was sealed with even more complications. Fabio Liverani started the season as their coach, but things were not going to plan. The solution was to bring Claudio Ranieri in, more than 30 years after his historic back-to-back promotion taking them from Serie C to Serie A, and he worked more magic.
Ranieri guided Cagliari to 5th place in Serie B, booking a playoff place, and from there they navigated their way through and back to the top flight.
Looking back at past meetings with Juventus, there have been 82 in all and the Bianconeri have won 44 of those. They drew 26 times and Cagliari have won 12 times. The Sardinians have only won one of the last 23 against Juventus, and that came in July 2020 when Maurizio Sarri’s side had already sealed the Scudetto. In the Rossoblu’s last season in Serie A, Juventus won 2-0 and 2-1.
