A calcio classic takes place today, as AC Milan and Juventus meet at San Siro for Matchday Nine of the Serie A season (18:00 CEST). Let’s take a look at the five biggest Bianaconeri moments in this historic fixture!
CHIESA’S DOUBLE DOWNS MILAN – Milan 1-3 Juve 2020/21
Arriving from Fiorentina in the summer, a lot of eyes were on Federico Chiesa from the first minute in Turin. Federico slowly grew into the team, getting better and better and more influential each week with this culminating in a sensational performance at San Siro in January.
Using his skill to jink past the opposition, playing in Paulo Dybala, who returned the ball with an audacious backheel to send Chiesa away in the box and Federico finished first-time to give us the lead! Although Milan would level at the end of the first half, Chiesa gave the Rossoneri a reminder of his abilities on the hour mark, cutting on the left and placing and angled shot beyond the stretch of Gigi Donnarumma to put Juve back ahead, as we would go onto win the game 3-1.
PIPITA’S PEARLERS – Milan 0-2 Juve 2017/18
Having recently announced his decision to retire at the conclusion of the current MLS season with current side, Inter Miami, there’s no doubting that this performance will go down as one of Gonzalo Higuain’s biggest in his illustrious career.
The San Siro showdown on Matchday 11 saw Juve dominate from the off in the fixture and it took just 23 minutes to take the lead: a quick-flowing move had Dybala feed Higuain, and his Argentine compatriot applied the fast finish to put us one-up. Then, in the second half, Kwadwo Asamoah cut in on the left passed across towards goal, Dybala dummied, Higuain gathered, took a touch and then placed a powerful daisy-cutter past Donnarumma at his near post to make it two and seal our win!
THAT DEL PIERO-TREZEGUET COMBO – Milan 0-1 Juve 2004/05
Matchday 35 of a neck-and-neck battle at the top of the Serie A table between Juventus and Milan. The Bianconeri currently hold a slender three-point lead and the Rossoneri hold home advantage in this crunch fixture.
The game’s key moment would see two Juventus and footballing legends combine to score an epic goal! Pavel Nedved sent Alessandro Del Piero away on the left-hand side, taking a tough tackle for his troubles. Del Piero shielded the ball from Gennaro Gattuso and attempted put a cross into the box, Gattuso blocked the effort. In a moment of instinctive genius, Del Piero went for an overhead kick across goal on the rebound, almost telepathically David Trezeguet got his head on the cross with the ball nestling past Dida and Juve in-front from an outstanding move, that would prove to be the game’s worthy winner!
HITTING MILAN FOR SIX – Milan 1-6 Juve 1996/97
Our biggest ever win away to Milan. It happened 1996/97 season, where we would win our 24th title, and we showed our champions class on the 6th April at San Siro.
After 19 minutes in Milan we were in front when Christian Vieri’s shot was parried by Sebastiano Rossi into the path of Vladimir Jugovic to slot home. On 32 mintues a trip on Alen Boksic was punished with a penalty that Zinedine Zidane dispatched to double our advantage that we would take into the break. Early in the second half, Jugovic again got on the scoresheet when he caught out Rossi with a powerful strike at his near post. Bobo Vieri made it four, 20 minutes from time when he got on the end of a brilliant chipped through-ball, rounded the keeper and slotted into the back of the net. Two minutes later and it was five, Vieri’s shot from outside the box was palmed to Nicola Amoruso who put the ball beyond Rossi. Marco Simone scored a Milan consolation, before Vieri netted his second of the match and our sixth by powering through the Milan backline to finish and round off a simple sensational performance.
DOMINANT DISPLAY – Milan 0-3 Juve 1983/84
Another big game between two greats, one that started with early pressure from Milan, soon turned around on the home side, as Juve went up the other end and a cross from the right-hand side was superbly met first time on the volley by Michel Platini that took a deflection on its way into the back of the net.
Just past the hour mark, World Cup winner, Paolo Rossi bore down on goal and the centre-forward held his nerve to finish past Ottorino Piotti and double our advantage. Platini turned provider on 84 minutes to help seal our win, when his expertly chipped pass found Beniamino Vignola at the back post, who took a touch to slice inwards before finishing to make it 3-0!
