James Troisi struck in extra-time to earn Australia their first ever Asian Cup victory in front of a rapturous home support at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.
With the score locked at 1-1 at full-time following a last-gasp Son Heung-Min equaliser for South Korea, the Juventus-owned midfielder, currently on loan at Belgian side S. V. Zulte Waregem, was on hand to fire home from close range on 106 minutes.
The win caps a great tournament for the Socceroos, whose performances grew stronger and stronger as the competition wore on. Ending the group stages in second place behind South Korea, Ange Postecoglou’s men racked up consecutive 2-0 triumphs over China and the UAE in the quarter and semi-finals respectively, before gaining revenge over their group rivals at the final hurdle.
Watching from the stands at the stadium lit up by Juventus’ visit in the summer was Alessandro Del Piero, employed in his role as the competition’s Global Ambassador.
Everyone at Juventus Football Club would like to congratulate James and Australia on their Asian Cup success.
