Two smiles and unfortunately a few tears. Saturday's FIFA World Cup action saw Angel Di Maria's and Leandro Paredes' Argentina advance to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Australia, whilst Weston McKennie's USA were eliminated by the Netherlands.
WESTON'S TOURNAMENT CONCLUDES
Qatar 2022 loses another Bianconero, after saying goodbye to Filip Kostić and Dušan Vlahović the day before. The United States faced off against the Netherlands yesterday in the first knockout game of the tournament, with Weston McKennie once again starting for the USA. The Netherlands would take the lead early on in the game through Memphis Depay after 10 minutes, before then getting a crucial second goal on the stroke of half-time through Daley Blind. The US fought back in the second half with Haji Wright scoring a spectacular finish on 76 minutes, however the Oranje sealed the result with less than 10 minutes on the clock with Denzel Dumfries' goal to send the Netherlands through to the quarter-finals.
McKennie lasted 67 minutes in the match, taking three shots at goal, one of which on goal and creating two key passes. His World Cup ends with four appearances, all as a starter, for a total of 275 minutes.
ARGENTINA ADVANCE
Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes were both left smiling smiling as Argentina made it into the quarter-finals, following a 2-1 win over Australia. Both Bianconeri were on the bench last night and did not take to the field in the Last 16 game. Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez scored the decisive goals, whilst Enzo Fernandez's own-goal offered a tense finale, however it didn't change the fate of the two teams.
