Giorgio Chiellini says the job is only half done after the Bianconeri recorded a 2-1 Champions League last 16 first leg success over Borussia Dortmund at Juventus Stadium on Tuesday night.
The 30-year-old believes the team laboured at times in the first period but were capable of gaining an important foothold in the tie ahead of the return leg in three weeks.
Speaking to Sky Italia following the final whistle in Turin, he began: “We played well. We struggled a bit at the midway point of the first half but were able to regroup.
“We’re a good side when taking chances that come our way and it showed this evening. After the break, we spurned many opportunities to make it 3-1, which would have given us a healthier advantage and that’s why I feel 2-1 is a fine margin.”
After Alvaro Morata’s strike had seen Juventus retake the lead ahead of the interval, Juventus’ vice captain said a dressing room pep talk was key to the hosts keeping Borussia Dortmund quiet in the second half.
“We analysed what wasn’t working and took the countermeasures to stop it. We focused our attentions on their individual players. They possess men who thrive in space and can cause anyone problems. The key is to close them down and remain compact.”
Ever the professional, Chiellini concluded his interview with a frank word on the slip that led to Marco Reus’ finish in the 18th minute: “When I saw Reus running through on goal, I was begging for him to miss. There was no other alternative. It was an unfortunate moment, but it happens.”
