Juventus Women continues to strengthen its ranks this summer and today they have made a key addition in attacking midfield by signing Cristiana Girelli.
With goals a big part of her game, the 28-year-old has established herself as one Italy’s great women players with Bardolino Verona and subsequently Brescia.
In Verona, Girelli emerged from the youth sector (following an early stint with Rigamonti Nuvolera) before making her first-team debut in 2005. She went on to play 148 matches (scoring 67 goals) in Serie A and 11 (six goals) in European competition.
A move to Serie A giants Brescia would follow in 2013 and Girelli’s performances kept hitting new heights. Over five seasons for Le Rondinelle, she scored 99 times in 120 league games and 11 goals in 37 Women's Champions League matches.
Girelli’s trophy haul is impressive to say the least. At Verona, she won four Scudetti, three Coppa Italia titles and as many Italian Super Cups. With Brescia, she claimed two more Scudetti, two Coppa Italia titles and four Italian Super Cups.
Furthermore, she has become a major force with the Italian national team. After 11 appearances and nine goals for the Under 19s, she boasts a ‘two in one’ record for Le Azzurre, scoring 26 times in 53 outings.
Her most recent international strike came in the 3-0 victory over Portugal, in which Italy qualified for the 2019 World Championships in France. Her Bianconere team-mates, Cecilia Salvai and Barbara Bonansea, also found the scoresheet that day.
Welcome to Juventus Women, Cristiana, and here’s to a successful career in black and white!
