Borussia Dortmund made it four Bundesliga wins out of four with Saturday afternoon’s 3-0 Ruhr derby triumph over Schalke 04 at the Westfalenstadion.
The scoreline may well have flattered the hosts, who had to wait until 78 minutes before taking the lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but they were still good value for all three points after fashioning a number of chances throughout a dominant first half.
With Schalke forced to commit bodies forward in their frantic attempts for an equaliser, Henrikh Mkhitaryan made sure of the points for the hosts when he converted Ilkay Gundogan's cross 60 seconds later.
Further gloss on an important triumph was applied when Tuesday night’s goalscorer Marco Reus continued his impressive form in the final third, pouncing on hesitation by goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther to add goal number three on 86 minutes.
The victory continues the domestic renaissance of a Dortmund side who move up to ninth place, just eight points off Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League qualification zone.
Their next encounter sees them travel to face Dynamo Dresden in the last 16 round of the DFB Cup on Tuesday.
