The celebration of Sara Gama while being mobbed by her teammates is the picture that bests captures the most recent meeting between Juventus and Roma. It was the Italian Cup final, the match that allowed the Bianconere to complete the domestic treble last season.
That match was played on the neutral ground of the Paolo Mazza stadium in Ferrara. At home, however, Juventus have defeated their Serie A Matchday 3 opponents twice.
Let's delve into the details of those two victories before the teams clash again on Friday 16 September at 14:30 CEST.
3 FEBRUARY 2019: JUVENTUS WOMEN 1-0 ROMA
The first Juventus Women-Roma match in history was played on 3 February 2019 at Vinovo. With a solid display, Juve confirmed their defensive strength, having not conceded a goal since the turn of the year.
In attack Juve created plenty but a waywardness in front of goal and an excellent display by Roma goalkeeper Rosalia Pipitone kept the scoreline goalless at half time.
BARBARA BREAKS THE DEADLOCK
Barbara Bonansea struck with the first and only goal of the game 19 minutes into the second half. Her shot from the edge of the penalty area proved to be enough for Juve to collect all three points and maintain their advantage at the top of the table.
12 DECEMBER 2020: JUVENTUS WOMEN 4-1 ROMA
Juventus-Roma met two seasons later due to the consequences of the COVID-19 lockdown, which saw the number of matches reduced, cancelling the home fixture against the Giallorosse. On 12 December 2020, the Bianconere and Roma did meet again, and the outcome was favourable indeed.
THE GIRELLI SHOW
Cristiana Girelli produced the outstanding performance in a match when Juve as a whole seldom put a foot wrong. On the day when the former Italy and Juve striker Paolo Rossi was being remembered across the country, Girelli showed all her finishing power with two goals.
Her first was also the game's opener, when she finished off some fine lead-up play by Arianna Caruso. The same two players linked up again for Juve' third when Caruso's corner was headed home by the number 10, settling the 3-1 advantage at half time.
SWEDISH DOUBLE
Either side of Girelli's second saw Juve's Swedish contingent get their names on the scoresheet. First, Linda Sembrandt latched onto a loose ball inside the area after Roma failed to deal with a Lisa Boattin corner to slam home goal number two.
Annamari Serturini temporarily reduced the arrears when she found the net to make the score 2-1, while in the closing minute Lina Hurtig completed the scoring to seal a 4-1 success.
