As the Bianconeri and Borussia Dortmund prepare to do battle in the Champions League last 16 first leg at Juventus Stadium on Tuesday evening, the 22 stars on show will endeavour to make it a night to remember for both sets of supporters.
After first locking horns back in 1993, six subsequent encounters have taken place, with Juventus’ overall record reading four victories, a draw and two losses.
Despite having not met since 1997, the links between the two teams have continued into the new millennium with eight players having donned both club’s famous jerseys over the years.
So without much further ado, Juventus.com takes you through a detailed look at the stars from past and present:
Julio Cesar
Born in 1963, Julio Cesar played in Turin for four campaigns in the early 1990s, scoring three goals in over 90 appearances. His sole trophy at the Stadio Delle Alpi came in the form of the UEFA Cup, incidentally won versus Borussia Dortmund back in 1993.
After swapping Italy for Germany just a year later, the defender spent five seasons with the German side where his honours included two Bundesliga titles, two DFL-Supercups, a Champions League and an Intercontinental Cup.
One for trivia fanatics, the big Brazilian scored against Juventus during the German side’s 2-1 UEFA Cup semi final second-leg defeat at the Westfalenstadion in 1995.
Ciro Immobile
Having plied his trade among the Bianconeri’s youth academy in the late noughties, Ciro Immobile would go on to make four first-team before enjoying loan spells at clubs including Siena and Pescara.
After finishing top scorer in Italy’s top flight for Torino with 22 goals last season, Borussia Dortmund came calling in June 2014 and the 25-year-old has bagged three strikes in 15 Bundesliga matches so far, as well as notching four in five Champions League games.
Jurgen Kohler
A member of Germany’s World Cup winning side from 1990, Jurgen Kohler played for just one club outside of his native country: Juventus.
On the way to winning a Scudetto title, UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia with the Bianconeri, the former defender scored eight goals in 102 Serie A encounters and featured on 23 occasions in the UEFA Cup.
Kohler went on to make 191 league appearances as well as playing 29 games in Europe’s elite competition and seven in the UEFA Cup during a seven-year spell with Borussia Dortmund from 1995 to 2002. His time at the club saw him bag two Bundesliga winners’ medals, as well as tasting success in the Champions League and Intercontinental Cup.
Robert Kovac
Centre-back Robert Kovac remained at Juventus for two seasons from 2005 to 2007. He followed up a Serie A title win in 2006 with a Serie B medal in the subsequent season.
With his career coming towards its conclusion, he left for Borussia Dortmund after the Bianconeri returned to Italy’s top flight but failed to achieve similar success during his time in Germany.
Andreas Moeller
Having spent two years with Borussia Dortmund from 1988 to 1990, Andreas Moeller then transferred to Juventus before rejoining the northwest German-based outfit in 1994.
Over the course of his two spells at the Westfalenstadion, the attacking midfielder cleaned up in the trophy department as he won two Bundesliga championships, three DFB-Pokal titles, a Champions League, two DFL-Supercups and an Intercontinental Cup. He also has a UEFA Cup winners’ medal from his time in Turin.
Moeller is the only player to have scored for either side during their encounters - firstly during Juventus’ 3-0 UEFA Cup final second leg win in Turin. For Dortmund he notched at the San Siro in April 1995, before bagging a strike in the Champions League group phase five months later.
Sunday Oliseh
A defensive midfielder during his playing days, the Nigerian made eight appearances in the 1999/2000 season for Juventus prior to spending four years with Dortmund.
Sunday Oliseh scored one goal in 53 games for the German club, a period which also saw him earn a Bundesliga winners’ medal in 2002.
Stefan Reuter
The former defender began his professional career with FC Nurnberg and Bayern Munich ahead of a move to Juventus in 1991. His solitary campaign in Turin saw the World Cup champion make 28 appearances without scoring a single goal before he returned to his native country with Borussia Dortmund.
Having ended his term at the Stadio Delle Alpi without a major trophy, Stefan Reuter featured on 300 occasions for his new employers, winning the Bundesliga title three times, as well as the DFL-Supercup, Champions League and Intercontinental Cup during a 12-year stint at the Westfalenstadion.
Paulo Sousa
Now manager of Swiss outfit Basel, Paulo Sousa only spent a total of three seasons with both of Tuesday evening’s opponents but certainly left his mark as a key member of two very successful teams.
The player who has won the most out of the eight to have turned out for both clubs, defensive midfielder Sousa secured two consecutive Champions League titles, first with Juventus and then Borussia Dortmund, lifting the Intercontinental Cup with the latter.
In addition to his success in Germany, the 44-year-old won the Scudetto title, Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup whilst playing in the famous black and white stripes.
