The future, past and present of Italian football came together in the trophy room of Juventus’ J-Museum this afternoon as one of the final and most iconic acts in the Bianconeri’s history making campaign was played out.
Representing the present, the eight players of the current Juve squad to have lifted five consecutive Scudetto crowns in a row - Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Martin Caceres, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Andrea Barzagli, Claudio Marchisio and Simone Padoin - and the past, a Countess who was still a child when the first Quinquennio winning side reigned supreme in the early 1930s.
Together it would be Maria Sole Agnelli, now witness to two all-conquering Juventus teams, and captain Buffon to personally deliver by hand the club’s 34th Serie A title to J-Museum president Paolo Garimberti.
Before joining Gianluigi in her duties, Maria Sole, daughter of the club’s first president Edoardo Agnelli, took a moment to stroll down the corridors of Juventus history and bring back some magnificent memories from times gone by and even share her lifelong passions with the Old Lady’s new heroes as they toured the museum together.
“I will always turn on the television in the morning to get up to date with any Juventus news and the first thing I see is normally some fantastic save that Buffon has made. I can’t watch the matches live, I’m too superstitious,” the Countess commented.
“When I followed Juventus as a little girl it was all based on the stories that my mother would tell me because children did not go to the stadium like they do today: she used to have two dogs, one black and one white, and she would always take them for walks through the streets of Turin to show her support for the team.”
Eighty-one years later however, the Countess was there to take in the moment first hand.
Having witnessed the champions’ celebrations on Saturday evening, the story of the so-called two Quinquenni d’Oro came to the perfect end today as the golden trophy was handed over to its rightful home at the heart of Juventus’ history, where it will remain on display to the general public from tomorrow onwards.
As for the future? Well, the Old Lady’s Magnificent Eight can now turn their attentions to this weekend’s Coppa Italia final, when they set their sights on ending an already unforgettable season with another addition to J-Museum’s bursting trophy room.
