Derby defeat is never easy to digest. A derby defeat in the manner that Genoa lost to Sampdoria last weekend will require the Rossoblu to dig deep into their reserves of character so as to leave behind the sense of disappointment. Former Bianconero Domenico Criscito saw his stoppage-time penalty kick saved by another former Juventus player Emil Audero. Seconds later, the referee blew the final whistle sealing a 1-0 victory for Sampdoria.
The derby loss left Genoa in second from bottom place with three matches to play.
TEAM FOCUS
- Genoa have won two of the last six Serie A matches, both at the Luigi Ferraris stadium - as many as from the previous 31 league games.
- After a series of eight matches without loss (one win and seven draws), Genoa have lost four of their last five league games, including the most recent in the Derby della Lanterna.
- Genoa have failed to net more than one goal in the last 13 home games of this tournament (eight without scoring). The last match in which the Rossoblu scored at least twice dates back to 17 October 2021, 2-2 with Sassuolo (2-2). Over the same period however, the Ligurian side has collected seven clean sheets - as many as in the previous 46 outings at the Ferraris.
- Genoa have the worst attack in the league with 25 goals, an average of 0.7 per game - only in two seasons in its history in Serie A has the Grifone managed a lower average (0.5 in 1973/74 and 0.6 in 1959 / 60 - both seasons resulted in relegation).
- Genoa is the team that has conceded the most headed goals (14) in Serie A 2021/22. On the other hand, no team has concede less headers than Juventus (three, all from corners).
PLAYER FOCUS
- All of Domenico Criscito's last 15 goals in Serie A have come from the spot. His most recent goal not from a penalty dates back to 17 February 2019.
- Juventus are the team that Mattia Destro has played the most Serie A matches against without ever finding the net (no goal or assists in 14 matches) but his two goals since January make him the only Rossoblu player with more than one league goal in 2022.
- The last of Stefano Sturaro’s six Serie A goals came against Juventus on 13 December 2020, at the Ferraris. He has since gone 38 games without finding the net.
- Caleb Ekuban has taken part in three (one goal, two assists) of Genoa's last six Serie A goals, after not playing a part in any of the Rossoblu's previous 19 goals this season.
- Salvatore Sirigu is one of six goalkeepers with at least 100 saves in this Serie A. The Genoa keeper's 114 saves put him behind only Bologna's Lukasz Skorupski (117) and Empoli's Guglielmo Vicario (129).
